Certificate in Safe and Effective Dance Practice
The new certification/qualification in Safe and Effective Dance Practice is an exciting new IADMS initiative in partnership with Trinity College London, the International Examination Board.
Launched in October 2008 at the IADMS 18th Annual Meeting in Cleveland, Ohio, USA, the Certificate recognizes best practice in delivering safe and effective dance activity. In the UK and other countries with similar programs, the level is equivalent to that of the end of the second year of a three year degree course, or the third year of a four year degree course.
The partnership between Trinity and IADMS combines a carefully constructed, state-of-the-art certification/qualification in safe and effective dance practice written by IADMS with the international expertise regarding assessment and examination provided by Trinity. The qualification will be administrated and assessed by Trinity-trained assessors acting with the guidance of an IADMS advisory panel. The IADMS panel which was involved in the creation of the certification/qualification will continue to work closely with Trinity to develop training materials, to advise on assessment, and to ensure that the qualification remains at the forefront of its field.
The Certificate in Safe and Effective Dance Practice is unique in its specificity. Candidates registering for the qualification will be assessed regarding their knowledge of the key principles underlying healthy dance practice, including basic applied anatomy and physiology, nutrition, and injury management. In achieving the qualification, candidates will be able to demonstrate their knowledge of safe and effective dance practice to employers, parents, and participants. Dancers at all levels will have confidence that the person teaching, rehearsing or coaching them is qualified and has demonstrated mastery of the knowledge required to work safely and effectively with professional dancers, dancers in training, children, and dancers in the community.
The certification/qualification is applicable to those working across all sectors of the dance profession and is applicable to all styles of dance, from ballet to ballroom, hip-hop, tap and bharata natyam.
'Trinity is thrilled to have been approached by IADMS to develop this unique qualification. The certificate is at the forefront of its field and we have IADMS' international standing and expertise to thank for this.'
Sarah Kemp, Chief Executive, Trinity College London
'We have been working towards this much needed qualification for many years and in Trinity College London have found a perfect partner to develop and deliver this qualification world wide.'
Rachel Rist, Chair of the Education Committee, IADMS
